## what is serial data transmission how does serial data transmission work?

Serial data transmission is a method of transmitting digital data between the sender to the receiver where at any time or clock rate is transmitted only 1 bit

The bits are sent one by one from the sender to the receiver using only 1 piece

Therefore data rates on serial data transmission will usually be slower when compared to parallel data transmission

The advantage of serial data transmission is the cost of making the easier and cheaper

serial data transmission is divided into 2 types of synchronous transmission and asynchronous transmission. how synchronous and asynchronous serial data transmission works?

### synchronous serial transmission

In synchronous transmission, before communication occurs should be synchronized clock between the sender and the receiver

The data sent in one data block (frame) containing the Preamble bits, the data bits themselves and the closing bits (postamble bits)

Added also bits of control on the block. Frame size can vary from 1500 bytes to 4096 bytes

In synchronous communication a 56 kbps line is capable of carrying data up to 7000 bytes per second

### asynchronous serial transmission

In Asynchronous transmission, prior to communication, no clock synchronization occurs between the sender and the receiver

Data is not sent per frame but data is sent per character and each character has a start bit and a stop bit

The start bit serves to indicate a sequence of character bits that are ready to be sent while the stop bit serves to perform the next character waiting process

Here is the asynchronous serial data transmission model scheme

The start bit is the SDA transition from logic 1 to logic 0 when the clock is logic 1. Stop bit is the SDA transition from logic 0 to logic 1

idle condition is a condition where the sender does not send data idle condition is usually marked with logic 1
